SHARE Architects: Never judge a book by its cover. But can you judge a building by its facade?
Tsvetan Petrov: At first glance, the facade is meant to capture attention and then reveal the story behind the architectural concept. It is not simply a visual teaser or a protective skin. Rather, it is an expression of the building’s overall idea. On another level, the facade reflects a deep and professional understanding of the parameters of the project’s program.
How can an architect design a facade that is in harmony with the history of the past, the trends of the present, and the needs of the future?
As architects, we have a responsibility to create and work across three dimensions of time. At any given moment, we should respect and understand the past, remain highly sensitive to the needs of the present, and boldly shape a vision for a better future.
Who should an architect serve: the client or society?
Needless to say, this is one of the lifelong challenges of the profession: balancing the needs of everyone involved, including society, the client, and the people who will live or work in the building. Last but not least, the architect also serves the principles of good design and the need for a more sustainable future.
What will you share with the participants at SHARE Sofia 2022?
The event is an excellent opportunity to share how we approach our work across different contexts and how we design projects at a human scale. We plan to present some exciting projects, as well as the passion, effort, and dedication our team has invested in bringing them to life.
The world is changing faster and faster, and the role of the architect cannot remain unchanged. How do you think the architect of the future will work?
The architect of the future will go beyond what is traditionally expected of the profession and become a complex social mediator among the many participants involved in a project. Imagination will remain a driving force, while determination will be essential in balancing people’s desires and needs, the transformation of our familiar environment, and the demands of a rapidly changing world.
The SHARE Sofia 2022 Forum took place on October 11, 2022, at Hyatt Regency Sofia. The event was organized by SHARE Architects, the largest network dedicated to architecture and construction professionals in Central and Southeastern Europe, together with the Chamber of Architects in Bulgaria (CAB).
The goal of SHARE Sofia 2022 was to explore design and performance strategies for the next generation of facades and their role in improving public space, while also showcasing major developments in Bulgaria and internationally.
