Sofia Airport's Terminal 3

11/09/2024

Sofia Airport operator SOF Connect unveiled the concept design for the future Terminal 3, a key part of the airport's long-term transformation. The Sofia Airport Terminal 3 project was developed by IPA - Architecture and more in collaboration with international aviation engineering company Egis and French architectural studio specializing in airports, 1PAX.

The concept combines contemporary architectural design, airport infrastructure, and advanced technology to create a more efficient and intuitive passenger journey. Terminal 3 is part of Sofia Airport's ambition to become Europe's first five-star regional airport.

The new terminal will feature 52 check-in counters, including self-service facilities, together with electronic boarding pass validation and passport control systems. Security checkpoints are designed to process up to 3,250 passengers per hour, while the baggage handling system will have a capacity of up to 2,400 bags per hour, supported by six baggage reclaim belts in the arrivals area.

At the time the concept was unveiled in 2024, Terminal 3 was planned to become operational in 2031. Together with Terminal 2, the new facility will increase Sofia Airport's capacity to 20 million passengers per year, making it one of Bulgaria's most significant public building and transportation infrastructure projects.
