Equinix Data Center Sofia is a high-tech industrial building designed for the needs of contemporary digital infrastructure. The facility is Equinix’s second data center in Bulgaria and expands the company’s capacity for data storage, processing and secure data exchange in the region.
The project responds to the demanding technical requirements of data centers and high-tech buildings, where reliability, security and operational continuity are essential. After the completion of the first phase, the building provides capacity for 350 equipment cabinets, with the possibility to add another 1,100 cabinets in a future stage. The spatial organisation is developed to support the efficient distribution of technical zones, routes and equipment rooms.
The building is organised over four levels, each designed around a clear central axis of symmetry. The individual zones can operate independently in emergency situations, as they are supplied by separate transformers. Backup power is provided through a diesel generator and UPS batteries, ensuring reliable operation of the facility across different operational scenarios.
The project combines industrial functionality with a high level of technological complexity. The structural and material solutions are tailored to the requirements for load-bearing capacity, fire safety, durability and easy maintenance. The reinforced concrete structure includes monolithic zones designed for heavy loads, responding to the specific equipment requirements and operational needs of the building.
The facade design uses glass as a key architectural element, giving the industrial volume a clean and technological appearance. The vertical sun-shading elements installed in front of the triple-glazed units have both a functional and visual role. They reduce solar exposure and emphasise the contemporary character of the building.
The data center is powered by 100% green energy, continuing the practice introduced by Equinix’s first data center in Sofia. This approach supports the long-term energy efficiency of the facility and responds to the growing requirements for sustainable design in buildings for digital infrastructure.
The project was developed by IPA - Architecture and more with a focus on technical reliability, precise coordination between architectural and engineering solutions, and long-term operational resilience. Equinix Data Center Sofia supports the development of digital infrastructure in Bulgaria and creates conditions for fast, secure and efficient data exchange for companies operating across Eastern Europe, the Middle East and international markets.
