Intuitive, a global leader and pioneer in robot-assisted surgery and minimally invasive care, has opened its first manufacturing facility in Bulgaria. Located in the industrial zone of Parvomay, the facility is part of the company's long-term strategy to expand its European manufacturing capacity in the field of advanced surgical technologies.
With an investment of approximately BGN 84 million, the facility specializes in the production of micro-optical components, optical systems, and 3D endoscopes used in da Vinci surgical systems worldwide. More than 10,000 da Vinci surgical systems are installed in hospitals around the world.
The architectural design, developed by IPA - Architecture and more, combines innovation, a sustainable approach, and functional logic on an industrial scale rarely seen in Bulgaria. Occupying a 169,076 sq m site, the facility incorporates specialized clean production areas, an administrative building, and comprehensive technical and engineering infrastructure. Its gross floor area of approximately 17,600 sq m is organized around manufacturing workflows and the needs of the team.
The project was completed in stages, allowing part of the manufacturing operations to begin before the entire complex was finished. The first stage established key spaces for assembling optical components and endoscopes, while subsequent stages added the necessary production areas and equipment. This approach shortened the time required to begin operations and supported a smooth transition to full-scale manufacturing.
The new Intuitive facility is an example of contemporary industrial architecture. Its facade uses lightweight, energy-efficient materials that create a clean, modern architectural expression. The interior environment responds to strict technological requirements, with carefully designed systems maintaining the controlled microclimate needed for working with sensitive optical components.
The administrative section complements the production areas through a clearly organized functional layout, including offices, conference rooms, training and recreation areas, a dining hall, restrooms, and specially designed facilities for pregnant employees and nursing mothers. The interior design reflects an emphasis on creating a comfortable and supportive working environment.
To support both technological and environmental sustainability, IPA - Architecture and more developed comprehensive engineering infrastructure for the complex. Particular attention was given to sustainable mobility, environmentally responsible transportation solutions, and efficient use of space.
The new Intuitive manufacturing facility stands out as one of the major investments in Bulgaria's medical technology sector. The project combines strategic vision, technological precision, and sustainable architecture, strengthening the country's position as a preferred destination for high-tech manufacturing and international collaboration.
