IPA - Architecture and more had the privilege of designing the production complex of the German company Leoni - Europe’s leading and the world’s fourth-largest manufacturer of automotive wiring systems, cables, and electrical components. Following a comprehensive evaluation for the implementation of its large-scale investment, the company chose Pleven as the location of its new plant, establishing itself as a strategic investor for both the region and Northern Bulgaria. The factory’s main activity is the assembly of automotive wiring systems, with Mercedes-Benz as its first client.
The complex fully complies with strict European standards and meets all operational and technological requirements of the company. It is functionally organized into three main zones - administrative, production, and logistics - with the latter two developed on the ground level to ensure maximum efficiency and workflow convenience.
Half of the total 30,000 square meters of built area is allocated to production. The project also includes comprehensive staff amenities, such as a canteen, locker rooms, meeting and training halls, providing optimal working conditions for more than 2,000 employees.
In projects of this scale and purpose, the installation systems are among the most complex and crucial aspects of the design process. Each specialized system was thoroughly researched and carefully integrated into the overall architectural concept to ensure safe, uninterrupted, and efficient operation. For example, water supply lines have been incorporated within the facade, directly feeding the machinery used in production.
Architecturally, the building is defined by clean, minimalist lines and balanced proportions, characteristic of modern industrial design. Subtle accents in Leoni’s corporate blue bring individuality and recognition to the structure. This color is used for the canopies, roof edging, and stairwell volumes, creating visual continuity throughout the complex. The facade is composed entirely of horizontal thermal panels, each two meters high, complemented by a metal cladding system that wraps around the entire perimeter, emphasizing the building’s cohesive form and precision detailing.
Every design decision made by IPA - Architecture and more contributed to a facility that functions as a reliable and efficient powerhouse for Leoni’s operations in Bulgaria - a production complex that stands as an equal and integral part of the company’s global manufacturing network.
