The city of Varna is taking an important step towards more accessible and higher-quality healthcare with the development of a new branch of Saint Sofia Hospital. The future medical complex will be located in the Vladislav Varnenchik district, in the Atanas Tarla area, and will combine a contemporary approach to healthcare with carefully planned architecture. The project, developed by IPA - Architecture and more, follows a clear and sustainable concept: creating an efficient, logically organized and long-term environment that responds to the needs of both patients and medical professionals.
The project includes three separate buildings positioned to provide sufficient daylight, fresh air and open space between them. This approach allows each part of the complex to function independently and efficiently without creating a sense of overcrowding. Each building is designed with a specific purpose, while the connections between them are logical, convenient and easily accessible for all users of the complex.
Building 1, the main hospital block, will have eight floors and two underground levels. It will accommodate the primary medical and administrative functions, including a diagnostic and consultation center, operating theatres, inpatient wards, laboratories, pharmacy, emergency department, offices and dining facilities. The internal organization will clearly separate the circulation of patients, staff and supplies, which is essential for safety and efficiency in a hospital environment.
Building 2 will focus on oncology care and will complement the main building and the entire hospital complex with specialized departments and equipment dedicated to cancer treatment. It will include radiotherapy and nuclear medicine departments, a diagnostic and consultation center connected to the main building via a warm connection, and inpatient facilities.
Building 3 will accommodate the technical infrastructure of the development, including installations and systems required to support the medical gas supply and the operation of the entire hospital complex.
The implementation of Saint Sofia Hospital Varna is planned in three phases, providing flexibility, investment control and the possibility of bringing individual parts of the complex into operation as they are completed. This strategy allows construction to progress efficiently without compromising the integrity of the architectural concept.
The architectural vision of the complex is clean and balanced. The buildings feature soft lines and harmonious proportions that create a sense of order and calm. The façades combine dark render finishes, high-performance insulated panels and glazed elements that allow abundant natural light into the interior spaces.
Accessibility is a key priority of the project. All entrances are designed to be level and easy to use by people with reduced mobility. The interior spaces include wide corridors, elevators with sufficient capacity for hospital beds and companions, specially equipped sanitary facilities and clearly marked routes that facilitate navigation throughout the building.
The development includes 180 parking spaces for visitors and staff. Vehicle access will be provided from Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard through dedicated entrance and exit points, as well as from Hemus Motorway via a specially designed local access road.
The total capacity of Saint Sofia Hospital Varna will be 582 beds, highlighting the scale of the project and its importance for healthcare services in the region.
