Campus Lozen Park was developed as part of the newly established Lozen Park residential neighbourhood on the outskirts of Sofia, in an area with a high-quality environment and strong potential for the development of a sustainable community. The building is conceived as both an educational facility and a community centre for the neighbourhood, bringing together a school, kindergarten and administrative facilities within a single architectural complex. The project establishes a clear public focal point for the area, combining functionality, accessibility and integration with the surrounding landscape.
Designed by IPA - Architecture and more, the three-storey educational complex brings together a kindergarten and a school covering primary, lower secondary and upper secondary education. The campus includes a library and information centre with an applied arts area, classrooms for music, science and technology, conference rooms, large and small sports halls, a theatre workshop, a cafeteria with its own kitchen, and a multifunctional hall for performances and events. Shared spaces are designed for flexible use, encouraging collaboration, creativity and social interaction.
The volumetric composition responds to the scale of the surrounding environment and the natural context. Low building volumes, open courtyards, pedestrian accessibility and generous landscaping create a sense of openness and calm. In this way, the campus contributes a new layer of social, cultural and ecological value to the neighbourhood.
One of the main challenges in the design was integrating the different functions, kindergarten, school and administrative areas, while addressing the specific requirements of each within a clearly organised and safe spatial structure. The architectural team addressed this through clear functional zoning, well-defined connections between levels and shared spaces that allow efficient use of the building without compromising the safety and comfort of the children.
A key design focus is the optimal use of natural daylight and the careful orientation of spaces, supporting energy efficiency, indoor comfort and a healthy internal environment.
The building has a total gross floor area of 7,834.55 sq m and is located on a 6,200 sq m site in the Orlova Krusha area, Lozen village, Pancharevo district. The campus includes three above-ground and two underground levels, forming a flexible and sustainable spatial structure.
The school has a capacity of 26 classes with 20 students each, accommodating a total of 520 students, while the kindergarten includes two groups of 20 children, with a total capacity of 40. For staff, 24 parking spaces and over 120 bicycle parking spaces are provided, encouraging sustainable mobility.
A typical school floor includes four classrooms, sanitary facilities, storage and service rooms, as well as a spacious naturally lit corridor. The layout is compact, with direct connections to the vertical circulation cores and exits to the courtyard. In the kindergarten, each group has its own activity room, bedroom, cloakroom and sanitary facilities, with direct access to the outdoor play areas.
The common areas are designed as bright and open spaces with visual connections to the surrounding landscape. Lobbies, corridors and staircases create a sense of openness and continuity, supporting easy orientation and communication. The façades combine natural materials and warm colours that highlight the different functional zones while maintaining a human scale.
The courtyard is a key element of the architectural concept. It is designed as a comfortable and functional outdoor environment tailored to different age groups. The space includes pedestrian paths, playgrounds, a multi-use sports field and recreation areas, complemented by trees, shrubs and flowering plants. Landscaping is not only an aesthetic element but also part of the campus’s environmental strategy, improving the microclimate, reducing dust levels and creating a natural buffer.
Campus Lozen Park offers modern science laboratories, sports facilities, a spacious auditorium, a cafeteria with its own kitchen, workshops and specialised classrooms for arts and sciences. The concept is centred on the child and aims to create an environment where learning, creativity and social development evolve together.
