About the project

MBAL Vita is expanding its medical facilities in the Krastova Vada district of Sofia through a comprehensive project that will increase the hospital’s capacity and create better conditions for treatment, work and patient care. Developed by IPA - Architecture and more, the project builds upon the existing structure through sustainable planning and a clearly defined architectural concept, ensuring that Vita Hospital will remain fully operational throughout the implementation process. The solution focuses on efficient functional organization, logical connections between different areas and a contemporary healthcare environment that supports the daily work of medical teams while improving patient comfort.

At the core of the project is the construction of a new wing connected to the existing building, together with improvements to the internal organization of several already completed areas. All works are carried out in phases, allowing the hospital to continue operating without disruption. Each phase is completed and commissioned before the next one begins, ensuring continuity of healthcare services throughout the construction process.

The initial phase includes the construction of two underground levels with supporting functions, providing 104 parking spaces for patients, staff and visitors. To facilitate access during construction, temporary pedestrian and vehicle routes, as well as protected circulation zones, have been planned to ensure safe movement throughout the site.

As the project progresses, construction of the above-ground section of the new wing begins. Several additional floors are planned, significantly expanding the hospital’s floor area and creating new spaces for medical services, administration and technical support. A key feature of this phase is the development of a modern conference and training center located on the seventh floor of the new building. The facility will host seminars, training programs and medical equipment presentations while providing a direct connection to the operating theatres. This will enable live broadcasting of surgical procedures on large screens as part of educational and demonstration sessions. The center will be equipped with advanced audio-visual systems that ensure high-quality presentations and communication. The interior team at IPA - Architecture and more is responsible for the interior design of the space, focusing on functionality, technology integration and a clean contemporary aesthetic.

At the same time, this phase includes the addition of an extra floor to the existing building. Parts of the interior layout will be adapted to improve circulation and make movement between different areas more convenient and intuitive.

Particular attention has been given to the connection between the new and existing structures. The architects at IPA have designed precise links between the floors to ensure a seamless transition between the two parts of the building without abrupt visual or functional distinctions. The new wing follows the architectural language of the existing building and integrates harmoniously into the overall hospital complex, complementing its functions while preserving its established identity.

The final phase of implementation will focus on completing the uppermost level of the new building. The spaces will be fitted out according to the future needs of the hospital. The area has been designed as a flexible and adaptable environment capable of accommodating administrative, medical or other functions depending on future operational requirements.

Upon completion of all phases, MBAL Vita will provide a total of 110 parking spaces. All entrances and internal circulation routes will comply with contemporary accessibility standards, incorporating smooth transitions, spacious entrance areas and barrier-free movement. The extension is conceived as a logical continuation of the existing structure, with a strong emphasis on convenience, functionality and long-term sustainability.

The phased implementation strategy allows each section of the building to be completed and used as intended without compromising safety, service quality or working conditions. The hospital will remain fully operational throughout the entire process, ensuring uninterrupted healthcare services and a secure environment for both patients and staff.

IPA - Architecture and more approaches this project with professionalism and responsibility, combining extensive experience and expertise in the architectural design of healthcare and medical buildings.

For MBAL Vita, this is a strategic investment with a clear vision for development, aimed at improving organization, increasing capacity and creating a contemporary healthcare environment tailored to the needs of patients, visitors and medical professionals.
